10 Things I Learned From Watching the Pope – What Do People Learn From Watching You?

The frenzy around Pope Francis visiting the United States can’t be denied. 10,000 tickets sold out within 30 seconds for his Philadelphia event. Catholics and non-Catholics are clamoring to hear him and be in his presence.
I watch him, see his photos on the cover of The Rolling Stones, Vanity Fair, People and in every newspaper I noticed that he is always smiling and seems genuinely happy.

As I watch him I have learned:
1) Be in Love – with yourself, with others, with your work, and with the world.
2) Be Humbly Authentic – know who you are and don’t try to be someone else.
3) Be Honest – speak your truth, gently, kindly, compassionately, and lovingly.
4) Listen Compassionately – to people at all levels, in any situation. Look at the person, and genuinely listen and be kind. Try to understand before being understood (thanks St. Francis).
5) Judge Not – if you’ve never walked in a person’s shoes don’t judge their life or lifestyle.
6) Be Forgiving – of yourself, and of others.
7) Look for Good – be confirming and acknowledging of the good that you have accomplished and of the accomplishments of others (including your family) and tell them how proud you are of them, and of yourself.
8) Be Happy – your attitude determines state of mind. Choose an attitude of happiness.
9) Be of Service – help out others, that’s why we’re here.
10) Have Faith – we’re not alone – things will work out.
As I watched Pope Francis on the ABC special with John Muir I was moved by his response to every individual that spoke to him of their difficult live and circumstances.

Perhaps you noticed it too, in every case he made genuine eye contact, this was even visible over the Skype-like connection. He smiled at them warmly, he listened intently, letting them tell their sad stories. Then, he acknowledged them, thanked them for their stories and commended them on their life lessons and gave them positive encouragement. He never scolded, condemned, tried to fix them or the situation, or judged.
What would you like people to learn just by watching you? I’m going to try to be more conscious.
Blessings be, my friends,
Anne

(In full disclosure, I believe that we’re all connected and here to do our highest good, that we need each other to do so and what happens to you happens to me (karma). This wonderful universe seems familiar to me and I believe that I’ve been here before. In this lifetime, I have been practicing Catholicism, and I’m still trying to practice. At times it’s been very hard. I thought I wanted to be a nun like my three dear aunts, Sr. Marie Louise, Sr. Monica, St. Betty Ann, and in my junior year I stayed at the convent. I was too tall for the beds and I swore too much, so I turned to sales and marketing career instead!)
