Dress Shabbily and They Remember the Dress
By Savannah Moe
Growing up in a rural suburb 12 miles from a town of 20,000 people, I got a sense of down-to-Earthness. My high school only had 300 people in it… that’s the entire school. My Mother worked at the elementary school I attended.
I was and still am the type of girl that can be a tom-boy, but still be girly. I get my hair colored, I get my nails done; but my all time favorite thing to do is to go to the Oregon Coast where there is recreational sand dunes and ride my quad. That’s how I grew up.
But my Mother is an amazing person. You know how people say “I never want to end up like my Mother”, well if I could be half of the person my mother is, that would be pretty amazing. She is a typical Virgo, she thinks she knows everything and doesn’t have a very good filter. She is the epitome of class in my mind. She never leaves the house without her hair being perfect, and her make-up flawless. Even when me and my mother wear very similar outfits, I still think she is classier, now that could be from her age and from being my mother.
My mother taught me that first impressions are everything, but she did so in a very motherly way. I still find dressing up to be fun, and I don’t think that will ever change. Some people say that they like to dress up for themselves, which I do as well. But for me mostly, it is I want people to see me in a good light. In this small town it is all about who you know, so first impressions are everything.
When I meet people for the first time, I want them to get to know the real me, but also the best version of that. My best outfit, with the best make-up. You never know who you are going to meet that day. What if you met your future husband and (obviously didn’t know at the time) were dressed in ac/dc pajama bottoms and a soda t-shirt? That doesn’t sound very flattering does it?
If you are dressed to perfection, people notice that and remember it and you. If you are dressed like described above, people don’t remember anything.
Now what if you are sick or Aunt Myrtle is visiting that week, and you don’t feel like dressing to the nines just to go the local supermarket? On those days, I never leave the house without a tiny bit of make-up on and at least a nice pair of jeans. Slippers? No way unless they are Uggs or Bearpaw boots and you cannot tell that they are. (I wear my jeans over them, they are especially comfy during winter months here in Oregon when we only see the sun for 90 days out of the whole year).
So I leave you with the words of Coco “Everyday is a fashion show, and the world is the runway.”
