How Diet Affects Skin’s Health & Wellness

When it comes to being healthy, experts agree that the condition of the skin can often be a great indicator. One thing that many people tend to overlook, however, is how the foods they consume affect their skin. Remember the old saying, “You are what you eat?” In the case of your skin, this is quite a reality. The way skin is designed, it will pull things, both good and bad, from the foods you consume. The good nutrients are then used to protect and improve your skin while the bad toxins are removed by way of the skin’s pores. This means that high quality food choices will result in healthier skin and less contaminants.

Salmon

This flaky, pink fish that is a favorite among dieters also provides several key benefits in the area of skincare. The high content of omega-3 fatty acids that salmon contains gives skin a supple feel and lowers the production of inflammation substances within the body. This simple change can cause a significant decrease in the formation of lines, wrinkles, and clogged pores.

Yogurt

You have probably heard that this tangy food is great for digestive health but did you know that it is a good choice for skin as well? Dairy products are loaded with proteins and vitamins, including Vitamin A, which skin greatly needs. The problem, though, is that most foods in the dairy category can also be high in sugars, fats, and hormones which have been known to trigger acne and clog pores. Yogurt is a great choice because you can easily find low fat options with no added sugar for the perfect balance your skin needs.

Green Tea

Consuming healthy liquid is another key to keeping your skin beautiful. When our body is properly hydrated, impurities aren’t trapped inside. Green tea is not only low in caffeine compared to other beverages (like coffee or soda) but it is high in antioxidants and phytonutrients as well. A great routine for fighting acne and blemishes is to alternate cups of unsweetened green tea and water throughout the day. This combination will keep your body and your skin happy.

Blueberries

Another food choice that provides a high quantity of age fighting antioxidants is the blueberry. Adding blueberries to your diet can give your body the ammunition it needs to combat skin damage caused by UV radiation from the sun which can cause premature aging of the skin. In addition, blueberries are full of vitamins and taste great!

Another thing to consider is that some foods work against the body and your skin. Examples of the foods that you should limit or avoid altogether include candy, salt, white bread, alcohol, and fried foods. These are all quite deficient in nutrients and can lead to problem skin if not eaten in moderation. While they are OK to enjoy on occasion, be cautious that they don’t become a regular part of your diet.
