Did You Know?
Corporal Punishment is still legal in 19 states across the South and Mid-west. These draconian laws perpetuate cycles of violence and fear in children of color. Educators also have agency in the matter, and must refuse to put their hands on Black and Brown children.
According to Atlanta Journal Constitution, In the 2011-2012 school year, an estimated 156,000 students were paddled in America’s public schools. On an average, one child is hit in public school every 30 seconds somewhere in the United States. 3 out of 4 of those kids are boys.
The sad part is that increasing evidence points to physical punishment in schools as being ineffective. If it’s not helping the kids, is it just there to allow school officials a way to vent on poorly-behaved students? Even if you give schools permission to paddle or spank your child, how are you guaranteed the punishment fits the crime?
