A marine mammal served as inspiration.
Zooey Deschanel, the Queen of Kitsch has named her daughter Elsie Otter.
Speaking with Today on Tuesday, newlyweds Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik explained why, exactly, they decided to name their daughter Elsie…Otter.
“We just really liked the name Elsie and then we both love otters,” they said in a real, actual quote. “They’re very sweet, and they’re also smart. They use tools…they hold hands while they sleep. There are so many amazing things about otters. They’re wonderful animals.”

If you have any questions regarding the latter half of the name, Deschanel and her husband Jacob Pechenik clarified for People magazine:
“‘It’s Elsie…’ Deschanel began, while Pechenik finished, ‘Otter.’ ‘Like the animal,’ the actress explained, with her husband adding, ‘Sea otter.’”
So, here’s to little Elsie Otter, born July of this year, and the cuteness of her name.
